“Dog
on Fleas has
been performing together for several years now, and it shows on Cranberry
Sauce Flotilla, their third CD for kids. Recorded mostly with a single
microphone in band leader Dean Jones's living room in upstate New
York, the songs exude loads of organic
vitality. The group's use
of fiddles, tubas, mandolins, acoustic guitars, and an upright piano,
combined with their down-home song selections, will make you feel
like you're listening to The Band, playing at Big Pink. Bassist John
Hughes's "Happy," fiddler/mandolin player David Levine's "Little
Bird," and guitarist Jones's title track could be the springboard
for a greatest-hits compilation; the songwriting is that strong.
The band enthusiastically tackles traditional tunes like "Weevily
Wheat" and add their own earthy touch to standards like Hoagy
Carmichael's "Lazy Bones" and Woody Guthrie's "Bling-Blang." This
is wonderful music from a fantastically talented group.”

Dog on Fleas- Cranberry Sauce Flotilla
“In a more perfect world,
Dog on Fleas would be among the best-known names in music for families….When
I Get Little may be my favorite Dog on Fleas album…Dog on
Fleas is a band in which each member shines equally…Like
all great bands for kids, the music of Dog on Fleas works for all
ages. When this outstanding band takes its place among the great
names of kids’ music, you’ll
be proud to say ‘I knew them when.’”

“When I Get Little is a delightfully eclectic array of unique
tunes tasting of bluegrass, Cajun, World, and straightforward rock.
The album includes some real treasures, including ‘The Coo-Coo’,
which boasts exotic balafons and djun-djun drums’ the ragtimey ‘Moon
Song’; and the folksy, a cappella ‘Honeybaby.’”

“What's most shocking about
this talented quintet is not how adeptly they surf from one genre
to another (one minute you're kicking up your heels at a hootenanny;
the next you're toe-tapping on a Mississippi riverboat or swing-dancing
at a Jazz Age supper club). Instead, it's the fact that When I
Get Little is this group's fourth CD: After rollicking along to
the call-and-response eco-anthem "Trees," or
the ska-tinged Humpty Dumpty tale "What's Behind the Wall," you'll
surely question why you haven't heard of them before. In this golden
age of children's music, Dog on Fleas deserves to finally emerge
from under the radar.”
Christopher Healy, Cookie Magazine
Dean Jones’ solo CD, Napper’s Delight was featured on
NPR’s All Things Considered as one of the best CDs in 2008.
When I Get Little is #7 on Zooglobble’s Favorite Kids' Albums
of 2006 “Fans of Dan Zanes' music should especially
check out this album…you'll find it a vibrant and joyous
experience. Highly recommended.”
